Mopani’s diabetic workshop examines proper foot care

Mopani Pharmacy in conjunction with Pharma Dynamics hosted a diabetic workshop on foot care on Friday, 5 April at their Crossing store.

Nelspruit based podiatrist, Dr Hannes Fuhri, addressed the thirty six attendees, sharing valuable information and tips on how to look after your feet. According to his presentation diabetics can prevent serious foot problems by following some simple steps:

  • Daily feet checks for cuts, scratches, corns, calluses, blisters, swelling, etc. Dress all wounds antiseptically to prevent infections.
  • Buy shoes in the afternoon when the feet are swollen to ensure a better, more comfortable fit.
  • Put on clean cotton socks daily.
  • Wash your feet with soap and luke warm water and dry them properly, especially between the toes. Use a hand lotion to keep the skin soft.
  • Prevent fungal and viral infections by avoiding going barefoot in communal areas like showers and bathrooms – always wear sandals/flip flops to form a barrier between the feet and the floor.
  • Have your feet checked annually for the condition of the feet’s circulation and sensation, even if all seems well – some problems may be painless.

After the presentation diabetic friendly snacks were served whilst the attendees mingled. Mopani’s monthly diabetic workshops are hosted free of charge and the pharmacy invites all diabetics to attend. The next workshop will be on DATE from 11am till 12pm at Mopani Crossing. Phone Vincent Morse on (013) 755 5548 for more information.
